The symptoms of toenail fungus are mostly appearance related. There are very few actual symptoms that a person can feel. It is the appearance of the nails and the embarrassment that usually leads people to seek treatment.
Toenail fungus usually starts with slightly whitened lines running through the top of the nail. There may be indentations or the nail may begin to curve. Over time the fungus causes the nail to thicken and turn yellow. You may also notice peeling and cracking at the cuticles. Dermatophytes can cause intense itching around the nail area, but there is usually no pain involved with this condition.
The worst symptom of toenail fungus is the embarrassment of having to expose the feet and toes for others to see. But this can cause a vicious cycle, due to people wearing closed up footwear to hide their feet. With this problem, the toes tend to recover faster when kept clean, cool and dry. Exposure to air and sunlight as often as possible can help relieve the infection faster.
